Expert Group Meeting (EGM)

Access to, use of and control over land is key for ensuring sustainable livelihoods opportunities, peace and stability, as well as the protection of the planet from climate change and other environmental risks. The 2030 Agenda, through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), affirms the importance of tenure security in fighting poverty and food insecurity, promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls, reducing land degradation, and achieving peace and stability.

The Arab region is making strategic efforts to consolidate multi-stakeholders’ and cross-sector efforts, develop capacities and expertise in bettering land governance for sustainable development. Despite these efforts, limited land tenure and governance data is available to inform planning and policy decision making at country or regional level. Limited access of timely, regular, reliable and sex disaggregated data makes it difficult for policy makers especially governments and development agencies to make informed decisions and or measure progress again key outcomes. Such information is necessary for evidence-based policymaking in the field of land governance, and its availability is an important precondition for better transparency and accountability in the land sector.

Rasheed for Integrity and Transparency (Transparency International – Jordan) will host an Expert Group Meeting on Land Monitoring and Reporting on National, Regional and Global Commitments. The event is part of the Arab Land Initiative’s stream of work and it is organized in partnership with UN-Habitat, the Global Land Tool Network and the International Land Coalition. The two-days event will be held on 14 and 15 July 2021 in Amman, Jordan. It will bring together experts from national land departments and statistical offices as well as other stakeholders responsible to land data monitoring and reporting efforts. Attendees of the previous training events held in March 2021, namely CSOs, NGOs, INGOs, development agencies, academia, professional individuals, consultants, and researchers working on good land governance and tenure security within Arab states are also scheduled to attend.

At the end of this EGM, participants will have access to needed land monitoring tools including indicators, methodologies and approaches for monitoring land tenure and governance interventions. Importantly, participants will develop clear work plans to facilitate data efforts at the country and local levels towards making data access, use and reporting on land tenure indicators in the SDGs, and others, possible in the region.
