30 July 2013: Following through on a commitment made at a Donor Roundtable meeting on the sidelines of the annual World Bank Land Conference in 2013, a Global Donor Working Group on Land has been established.
The Working Group aims to: improve information exchange on tenure, governance and rural and urban issues; improve donor coordination at the international level through consensus building; and take joint action where suitable. The Working Group is particularly necessary based on increased interest from governments and development partners on land tenure and resource governance issues, including the recent Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security. Members include the existing members of the European Union Working Group on Land, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), UN-Habitat, and the World Bank, as well as numerous additional donors.
The group will meet annually back-to-back with major land related events, and may meet online or via telephone conference calls. The Working Group on Land will be facilitated by the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development and chaired on a rotating basis by participating organizations. The UK, through the Department for International Development (DFID), will be the inaugural chair.
