Going Beyond Data to Develop a Global Status Report on Land Governance

In Nepal, the Rural Women's Economic Empowerment Joint Programme, implemented by UN Women, Food and Agriculture Organization, International Fund for Agricultural Development and World Food Programme, and funded by a consortium of donors seeks to improve women farmersÕ agricultural production and income, but also changed gender-discriminatory attitudes of their male counterparts. Rural women form a large proportion of the agricultural labour force in Nepal and play a vital yet unrecognized role in agriculture that sustains nearly 80 percent of the population. Perceived mainly as care givers, their work in farming is largely undervalued. Women farmers are often paid less than men for the same work, and lack access to resources and markets due to discriminatory attitudes. However, since the launch of the Joint Programme, a new narrative is unfolding across the villages of Rauthat and Sindhuli districts. As more Nepalese men migrate abroad to find work, an increasing number of rural women are taking up farming. By improving womenÕs agricultural production, access to markets and leadership skills, the programme has increased their income, food security and independence. Pictured: Chandra Kala Thapa, one of many smallholder women farmers from Ranichuri village in Sindhuli district, was barely able to produce enough grains to feed her family. With support from the Joint Programme, she converted her field from grain production to high-value vegetables. ÒNow the prices are good and the money comes on time. This was not the case when I used to cultivate grains instead of high-value vegetables,Ó she says. Photo: UN Women/Narendra Shrestha

About the Global Land Forum 2018

Every two-three years, ILC organizes the Global Land Forum (GLF). This unique event brings together ILC members and other stakeholders from grassroots organizations, activists, local and international NGOs, and researchers, to multilateral organizations and government agencies from around the world to advance understanding of the complex and dynamic political, economic, environmental and social linkages between land governance, food security, poverty and democracy. By convening all members and key partners of the network, the Forum creates opportunities for participants to learn from, and contribute to, land governance successes and challenges.

As one of the largest land forums in the world, GLF 2018 is expected to be opened by President Joko Widodo, with ministers from ILC member countries; Asia, Central Europe, Africa and Latin America, civil society organizations, UN agencies, government agencies, academics and community organizations in attendance.

Under the overarching theme of United for Land Rights, Peace & Justice, the forum will discuss agrarian reform as one of the many land development issues. The overarching themes are Women’s Land Rights, Food Sovereignty, Agrarian Reform and Land Grabbing.

The ILC Award will also be given at the GLF 2018. The Award recognizes ILC members leading the fight for a more just and equitable world.
